A well known illustration of Maeshowe in 1862 by a Mr A Gibb of Aberdeen for James Farrer MP who pointed out that every possible care had been taken in the accuracy of the drawing.
According to this sketch the tomb had a hole in the top at the time and that is how people made their way into it (the tunnel was blocked at this point).
Maeshowe was taken into state care in 1910 and given a concrete roof.
