Gemma McGregor (B.A. Hons)

Orkney composer, Gemma McGregor, tends to write music with a sense of place that is often based on speech rhythms. Gemma was selected to attend the 2010 Saint Magnus Composers Course directed by Alasdair Nicolson and Sally Beamish. She has received several commissions to date, including four pieces performed at the Saint Magnus Festivals of 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010.

Gemma’s works have been selected for three competition performances: “Tantrum”, for solo flute, for performance at the 2008 Sound Festival, “Gifts for Your Journey” was performed by Mr McFalls Chamber at the 2009 Connecting Festival, and “Miss Wilhemina’s Rehearsal” for performance by the Red Note Ensemble in November 2011.

Gemma wrote the soundtrack for Mark Jenkins’ film, “Gunnie” (2010), and is currently writing music for a film by Raymond Besant. The Eris Ensemble recently recorded a CD of her chamber music entitled “From Nothing” (released by Watercolour Studios in 2011). Gemma is currently working on a piece for choir, organ and brass for the Aberdeen choir, Con Anima.
